Há muito tempo venho tentando, sem sucesso, pensar em um texto bacana para publicar aqui no blog que não sejam as tradicionais resenhas críticas dos shows e das peças de teatro às quais eu vou prestigiar. No entanto, hoje estava eu ouvindo uma música e pensei: "acho que essa música pode dar um texto bem interessante!" - e aqui estamos.
Para começar a dar o clima desse post, dê play e entre no universo felino do clã Jellicle!
A música em questão é "Macavity: The Mystery Cat", na voz da Sarah Brightman. Para falar essa música, que conta sobre o grande vilão da peça de teatro musical "Cats", de Andrew Lloyd Webber, que estreou no West End londrino em 1981, preciso voltar ainda mais no tempo: mais precisamente para 1939, quando do lançamento de "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats", coletânea de poemas de T.S. Eliot voltada para o público infantil (aliás, sua única obra destinada a esse público e, justamente, a sua mais famosa). Na coletânea de Eliot, ele conta a história de vários gatos que formam a sociedade Jellicle e cada um, à sua maneira, tem uma função e uma singularidade, as quais são descritas nos poemas de forma eloquente e doce, na medida perfeita para cativar as crianças daquela época e de todas as épocas.

O poema "Macavity, The Mystery Cat" conta a história de Macavity, um gato laranja e bem levado que apronta todas mas sempre se safa das broncas porque simplesmente desaparece nos momentos mais oportunos. Conhecido pelos Jellicle como o "Napoleão do Crime", por conta de suas conquistas para o mundo gato e para o desespero dos humanos, Macavity é o mestre da levitação e dos esconderijos, sempre se esgueirando por aí sem se deixar ser percebido. O poema está logo abaixo na íntegra e no original em inglês:
Macavity's a Mystery Cat: he's called the Hidden Paw -
For he's the master criminal who can defy the Law.
He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair:

No musical de Andrew Lloyd Webber, a história de Macavity, o grande vilão da peça por sequestrar o Old Deuteronomy (chefe dos gatos Jellicle), é contada por duas gatas fascinadas por sua figura: Demeter e Bombalurina. As duas gatas desprezam Rum Tum Tugger, o galã do clã, mas são apaixonadamente agoniadas com Macavity e suas aparições assustadoras ao longo da peça. Portanto, são elas as melhores figuras para falar mais sobre Macavity e suas fugas estratégicas.

A interpretação que me despertou a vontade de escrever este texto, no entanto, está relativamente próxima da montagem londrina de "Cats" mas nem tanto... Explico: Sarah Brightman, hoje ex-esposa de Andrew Lloyd Webber, era apenas uma jovem atriz e soprano à época da primeira montagem de "Cats", na qual interpretava Jemima, a mais nova integrante da trupe Jellicle e a primeira a ser receptiva com Grizabella, a renegada protagonista da história do musical. Após uma bem-sucedida temporada da peça em Londres, Brightman partiu para novos horizontes até se tornar estrela internacional ao estrelar "The Phantom of the Opera", a mais conhecida peça de teatro musical de Andrew Lloyd Webber, no qual ela interpretava Christine Daaé, a bailarina promovida a soprano que é a protegida do Fantasma da Ópera, a mítica criatura solitária que habita os subsolos do Opéra Populaire, a casa de ópera de Paris onde se passa a história.

Em 1995, muitos anos depois de ter feito parte do elenco de "Cats", Brightman gravou, em seu álbum "Surrender", a sua rendição de "Macavity: The Mystery Cat", junto de clássicos de outras peças de Andrew Lloyd Webber, como "Sunset Boulevard", "Aspects of Love", "Evita", "Jesus Christ Superstar", entre outras. Foi essa a gravação que me motivou a escrever o presente texto e a refletir sobre a importância que certas canções exercem em cada um de nós. Se não fosse a gravação de Brightman, eu dificilmente escreveria um texto contando a história de Macavity - ainda que eu goste muito dos vilões, Macavity nunca foi um antagonista que me chamou a atenção o suficiente - porque o foco de "Cats" não é o vilão, nem tampouco a sua astúcia, mas, sim, a segunda chance que Grizabella ganha do Old Deuteronomy. Com isso, Brightman me fez enxergar Macavity como um dos principais personagens da história de "Cats" e me levou a rever, pela enésima vez, o DVD da apresentação do musical gravada para home video em 1998, com Bryn Walters interpretando Macavity - outros nomes relevantes do elenco dessa versão são Elaine Paige (Grizabella), Ken Page (Old Deuteronomy), Aeva May (Demeter), Rosemarie Ford (Bombalurina), Veerie Castleyn (Jemima) e John Partridge (Rum Tum Tugger). Ao rever o filme-concerto, entendi que Macavity é, sim, central e uma das forças motriz da história, pois o sumiço do Old Deuteronomy é um evento de suma importância para o bom andamento do musical e ocorre em momento crucial para a decisão final do chefe do clã sobre quem terá direito à nova vida Jellicle.

Sem dúvida, Macavity é um personagem notório e não se deve cometer a injustiça de deixá-lo de lado dentro da história de "Cats"nem dentro da antologia poética de T.S. Eliot, dada a sua importância para o clã Jellicle.
